Overview - Study Visa ( More than 90 Days)
According to Royal Decree 1155/2024, new immigration regulations came into force on May 20, 2025, bringing significant changes to visa procedures.
MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENTS
Only the following options are available for minors (under 18) to study in Spain
- Higher Education Studies
Applicants aged 17 may apply if they provide official certification of high intellectual abilities. Applicants will be considered of suitable age even if they are younger, provided they submit an official statement from their country's educational authority confirming both early completion of pre-university studies and recognition of high intellectual ability.
- Participation in student mobility programs for compulsory or post-compulsory secondary education.
- Temporary relocation for educational purposes as part of a humanitarian program
APPLICATION TIMELINES & DOCUMENTS
- Application Deadline: At least 2 months before the study start date (unless a justified reason is provided by the student for late submission).
- Passport Validity: Must be valid for at least 1 year (applies to all long-term visas).
- Proof of Enrollment: Submit evidence of payment of registration and tuition fees to the Spanish institution.
- Health Insurance: Must cover from one month before the course begins to 15 days after it ends, or 1 full year if the program is longer than 12 months.
- Visa Validity: Can be granted from one month before the course begins until 15 days after it ends, unless the applicant opts for a visa valid only for the course duration.
- Family Members: Only family of students enrolled in a higher education progrogram, or Specialized Healthcare Training are eligible to apply as dependents.
ELIGIBLE CATEGORIES FOR VISAS (>90 DAYS)
- 1. Higher Education:
- University and non-university programs that lead to official qualifications under Royal Decree 1027/2011.
- Includes university own degrees, Vocational Training Master's degrees (Royal Decree 659/2023), and mandatory internships.
- Programs may be in-person or hybrid (at least 50% in-person for non-university courses).
- In-person language studies at accredited higher education institutions are included.
- 2. Post-compulsory Secondary Education:
- Authorized centers offering full-time education leading to recognized qualifications.
- Must be in-person or hybrid, with at least 50% in-person instruction.
- 3. Student Mobility Programs:
- For compulsory or post-compulsory education in Spain through exchange or educational programs.
- 4. Volunteering:
- Must be through registered non-profit organizations pursuing public interest goals.
- 5. Training Activities, including:
- Foreign language assistants in official educational centers.
- Spanish or co-official language studies (not the student’s native language).
- Preparatory courses for healthcare competitive exams.
- Programs leading to technical/professional licensure.
- Full training (non-modular or partial) for vocational certificates (levels 2 or 3), as per Organic Law 3/2022.
FAMILY MEMBER ELIGIBILITY
Only applicable if the student is enrolled in higher education or specialized healthcare training:
Eligible family members include:
- Spouse, common-law or stable partner (even if unregistered, with proof of relationship—1 year of cohabitation or shared children).
- Unmarried minor children of the student or partner.
- Unmarried adult children dependent due to disability or illness.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Application Timeline: Submit at least 2 months in advance.
- Submission: In person or through an authorized representative at the BLS Spain Visa Application Center in Bangkok.
Representative must present original passport/ID and signed authorization from applicant.

Proof of Residence
- Nationals of Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos: No need to submit proof.
- Other nationalities: Must be legal residents in one of the countries above. Submit:
- Original residence certificate from local authority.
- Copy of visa/residence permit.
TRANSLATION REQUIREMENTS
- All documents in a foreign language must be translated into Spanish.
For documents issued in Thailand:
- If issued in English: Must be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator in Spain.

- If issued in Thai: Must be translated into Spanish by a translator recognized by the Spanish Embassy, then certified by the Embassy.

For documents issued in Myanmar, Cambodia, or Laos:
If in English: Same as above—translate via a sworn translator in Spain.
For documents issued in Myanmar, Cambodia, or Laos:
If in Burmese, Khmer, or Laotian:
- First, translate into English via public authority.
- Then, translate from English to Spanish by a sworn translator in Spain.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- The Embassy may request additional documents or a personal interview.
- Ensure all contact information on the application form is accurate.
- Visa status will not be shared before processing is complete.
- Processing time: 1 month
- Once issued, the visa must be collected in person at the Embassy of Spain.
For minors, a parent or legal guardian must collect it.
- Foreign public documents must be legalized/apostilled when specified in the list of requirements.
Short-term Studies (Up to 90 Days)
For study periods of 90 days or less, a national study visa is not required.

General Notes
Required Documentation
1. National Visa Application Form (See form section)
- Must be submitted at least TWO MONTHS before the start of studies or activities,
unless a justified reason is provided for later submission.
- The national visa form must be duly completed and signed by the applicant.
- In case of minors, the form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
2. Proof of Legal Residence in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, or Laos
Nationals of Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, or Laos are exempt from this requirement.
- Other nationalities:
- Original residence certificate issued by local authorities with
current address
- Copy of visa or residence permit.
3. Passport
- Must be valid for at least one year.
- Passports issued more than ten years ago will not be accepted.
4. Photocopy of All Passport Pages
5. Recent Photograph
- One passport-sized color photo, taken within the last six months.
- White background, full-face view, without sunglasses or face coverings.
Police Clearance Certificate
- Required for applicants of legal age, issued by the competent authorities of the
countries in which the student has resided during the last five years
- Must be issued within 90 days prior to the application.
- Must be legalized/apostilled and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator in Spain.
- Not required if the intended stay in Spain is 180 days or less.
7. Medical Certificate
- Confirming that the applicant does not suffer from any disease listed under the
2005 International Health Regulations.
- Must be issued within 90 days prior to the application.
- Requirements:
- Printed on Dr./hospital official letterhead or embassy template (see application form section).
- Signed by a licensed physician (not a nurse or assistant).
- Must include stamp, signature, and license number.
- Translated into Spanish, unless the embassy template is used.
8. Health Insurance
- Must be issued by a provider authorized to operate in Spain.
- Requirements:
- Valid from one month before the start of studies until 15 days after completion, or for one year if applicable.
- Must cover 100% of medical, hospital, and extra-hospital expenses.
- No deductibles or coverage limits permitted.
- If coverage is limited to a specific amount, it must not be less than €30,000.
- The insurance contract must remain valid throughout the authorization period.
- Travel insurance is not accepted
- For volunteer programs, proof of civil liability insurance issued by the sponsoring
organization must also be submitted.
9. Admission letter and proof of payment of tuition fees:
9.1 Higher Education (University, etc.)
- Admission letter from a recognized higher education institution in Spain
- Proof of payment of tuition or enrollment fees
9.2 Post-secondary Education
- Admission letter from an authorized educational center
- Proof of payment of enrollment or tuition fees
9.3. Student mobility or exchange program (Compulsory or post-Compulsory sec
ondary education) Applicable only to students under 18 years of age
- Admission letter from an authorized educational center, stating that they assume
responsibility for the student during the stay, including costs of studies, accom
modation, and return to the country of origin.
- Proof of payment of enrollment or tuition fees.
- Proof of accommodation arrangements, either:
- With a family selected by the organization responsible for the program, or
- In a boarding school or residence assigned or arranged by said organization.
Authorization from both parents:
- Authorization before a notary public from both parents, or from the person
holding sole parental authority or guardianship, granting permission to pursue
studies at the institution in Spain. This must include details of the institution, the
responsible organization, and the planned period of stay.
If accommodated with a family selected by the organization, express authoriza
tion in favour of the adult members of that family. This must expressly exclude any
purpose of adoption and confirm acceptance of said persons under the same
terms. If accommodated in a boarding school, contact details of a designated ref
erence person must be provided.
The document must be duly legalized and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator in Spain.
- Birth certificate of the minor dully legalized and translated by a sworn translator in Spain.
- Parents or legal guardian’s ID or passport.
9.4 Voluntary/Community Service
- Admission letter with program details (tasks, duration, housing, supervision)
- Proof that the organization is registered with competent authorities in Spain
9.5 Educational and Training Activities
- Admission letter to the program
- Proof of payment
- For preparatory healthcare exams: submit proof of eligibility (Spanish or
recognized foreign degree)
10. Proof of Financial Means
- Minimum requirement: €600 per month (IPREM 2025), equivalent to €7,200 per year, plus:
- 75% IPREM for first family member
- 50% IPREM for each additional family member
- Required Documentation:
- Original and copy of a bank certificate and bank statements covering the last six
months, including the bank’s address, telephone number, and email.
- If sponsored by a family member:
- Birth certificate (legalized/apostilled and officially translated into Spanish
by a sworn translator).
- Notarized declaration of sponsorship, in which a parent, guardian, or relative assumes full financial responsibility for the applicant. This must cover
at least the minimum monthly amount required for the duration of the stay
and be accompanied by an official Spanish translation.
Suggested wording:
"I hereby certify that I, [full name of parent, guardian, or relative], assume
full financial responsibility for [full name of applicant]’s round-trip airfare,
monthly room and board expenses while in Spain, as well as any addi
tional expenses, including emergencies, that may arise during his/her
stay."
Sponsor’s original bank certificate and bank statements (last six months).
- If the applicant is the recipient of a scholarship, detailed information must
be provided regarding the monthly amount to be received. Should the monthly
amount exceed €600, no additional proof of financial means will be required.
11. Current Employment or University/School Letter
- A letter issued by the applicant’s current employer or school/university. (if any)
12. Proof of Representative’s Identity and Authority
- If the applicant is a minor: copies of parents’ passports/IDs and birth certificate,
duly legalized and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.
- If the application is submitted via a representative: copy of the representative’s
ID/passport and power of attorney or authorization letter.
13. DOCUMENTS FOR ACCOMPANYING FAMILY MEMBERS Only applicable if the student is
enrolled in higher education or specialized healthcare training:
For each accompanying family member, submit:
- Documents listed under points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 (where applicable).
- Proof of family relationship:
- Marriage certificate (for spouses).
- Birth certificate (for children).
- Divorce or custody documents (if applicable).
- All documents must be apostilled/legalized and translated into Spanish (see Overview Section).
- If the student will be accommodated in a boarding school, the contact details of a
designated adult reference person must be provided.
- A notarized authorization must be apostilled/legalized by the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and by this Embassy, and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.
- Copies of parents’ IDs/passports.
Processing time and visa collection:
- Processing time is up to one month from the date of submission.
- This period may be extended if additional documents or an interview is required.
- Once approved, the visa must be collected in person within two months, since
the date of notification. Failure to do so will result in the application being
archived.
In case of refusal:
- Visa refusals will be notified in writing, with reasons provided. The applicant may
submit an appeal within one month, or a judicial appeal to the High Court of
Justice in Madrid within two months.
The appeal letter and all supporting documents must be drafted in Spanish or translated
into Spanish.
Translation of documents: (See Overview Section)
BLS is competent to accept visa applications from individuals residing in the
consular district or
who are regularly in the consular district for study purposes.
Applying for a study visa also entails applying for a study stay permit.
- Visa application period: Visa applications may be submitted up to 6
months before the
start of the corresponding study programs.
- Place of submission: Applications must be submitted to BLS

- Proof of receipt: Once the visa application is submitted at BLS, the
Embassy will
provide the applicant with proof of receipt of the application with a code that
enables
them to check the status of the dossier through the following link: https://sutramiteconsular.maec.es/Home.aspx
- Rectifying the application: The Embassy may ask the applicant to submit,
in the term of
10 working days, any missing documents, or to provide additional documents or
data
that are necessary for a decision regarding the application. The applicant may
also be
called in for a personal interview.
- Decision period: The legal period for reaching a decision is
of 1 month
from the day after the application submission date, but this period may be
extended if an interview or additional documents are requested.
- Collecting the visa: The visa must be collected in person by the
applicant or by their
representative (if the applicant is a minor) within a maximum period of 2
months,
counted as of the day after the date on which the favourable decision is
notified. The
Consular Office will inform the applicant regarding the procedure for the return
of the
passport and any other original documentation.
- Refusal of the visa or study stay permit: Refusals of the visa or study
stay permit will
always be notified in writing, setting forth the grounds on which the decision
adopted
was based.
- Appeals: If a study stay permit or visa is refused, the applicant may
submit an appeal for
reconsideration to this Consular Office within 1 month of the day following the
date on
which notification of the refusal is received. An application for judicial
review may also
be filed with the High Court of Justice of Madrid within the 2-month period
beginning
the day after the date on which the applicant receives notification of the visa
refusal or of
the dismissal of the reconsideration appeal.
- Validity period of the visa: If the stay in Spain does not exceed 6
months, the visa will
be valid for the entire stay and Foreigner Identity Card won’t be required.
If the stay in Spain is for longer than 6 months, the visa will be only valid
for a 90 days.
In this case, the student must apply for a Foreigner Identity
Card within a period of 1
month from their entry into Spain, at the Foreign Nationals' Office or
the Police Station
of the province of residence.
